Ways To Get Involved with Your Academy
Level 3
Activities involve a moderate amount of time and participation that may include conference calls, in-person meetings, and reviewing and editing materials and policies. Examples are participation in one of our Sections, joining one of the Academy’s clinical committees in your specialty area, or becoming a journal reviewer.
Join a Committee (Level 2, Level 3)Your Academy and Foundation encourage members to apply to join an education, clinically-focused, or Board of Governors (BOG) committee, or one of the many other committees that fit your area of expertise or interest. These committees offer you opportunities to influence the practice and study of medicine, network with colleagues in your field of expertise, and participate in leadership activities of the Academy and Foundation.

Represent Your State Society and Board of Governors (Level 2, Level 3,Level 4)
Established in 1982 as a grassroots member network, the BOG functions as an advisory body to the Board of Directors (BOD) and the AAO-HNS membership. In addition, the BOG acts as an avenue of communication for the BOD. It is made up of local, state, regional, and national otolaryngology—head and neck surgery societies from around the United States. The BOG plays a vital role in the Academy and in the specialty to identify and respond to issues that confront otolaryngologists and their patients. These issues include legislative and regulatory proposals at the local, state, and federal levels; as well as socioeconomic and public relations matters. Members of this grassroots network are typically community practitioners in the ENT field.

Section for Residents and Fellows (Level 2, Level 3, Level 4)All Academy resident members and fellows-in-traning are automatically members of this section. Since 2000, the SRF has given this group of members a voice in determining the course of their profession while still in training. This allows residents to run for office, vote in the election of SRF officers, and propose resolutions for the Section to vote and act on.

Volunteer with a Humanitarian Mission (Level 2, Level 3, Level 4)Humanitarian work includes a wide range of opportunities to bring improved medical care or education to underserved populations. You can volunteer to work at a local free clinic, provide head and neck cancer screenings at a health fair, visit a Native American reservation, or provide financial and moral support to residents and other otolaryngology—head and neck surgeons who do humanitarian work. You can also take part in a medical mission in the developing world, joining teams that specialize in cleft lip/palate, head and neck cancer, pediatrics, plastic reconstructive surgery, otology, thyroid care, or general otolaryngology.

Women in Otolaryngology Section (Level 2, Level 3, Level 4)Created in 2010, the section for Women in Otolaryngology (WIO) offers women otolaryngologists the chance to strengthen career support systems and skills through networking events, professional development, and mentoring programs. WIO supports women otolaryngologists by identifying and addressing their needs, fostering their development, and cultivating women as leaders in the specialty.

Attend Our Annual Advocacy Conference (Level 3)Join us at our annual advocacy conference, typically held in conjunction with the BOG meeting in the spring. This conference is an excellent opportunity for members to visit Washington, DC, learn about pertinent healthcare legislation, network with colleagues, and educate Members of Congress about ENT surgeons and their legislative priorities.

Be a Presenter at Our Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO (Level 3)The AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO, the world’s largest gathering of the specialty, is held each fall with thousands of Academy members, non-member physicians, allied health professionals, administrators, and exhibiting companies attending. The annual meeting draws more than 6,000 medical experts and professionals from around the world. The Scientific Program of the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO is composed of scientific oral presentations, mini-seminars, and scientific poster presentations. Instruction courses are one- or two-hour sessions that address current and diagnostic, therapeutic, and practice management topics presented by experts in the field of otolaryngology and other healthcare professionals. Submissions are solicited each fall for instruction courses, scientific orals, scientific posters, and mini-seminar presentations.

Become an ENT Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee (ENT-CAC) Representative (Level 3)
Are you interested in becoming your Medicare contractor’s CAC representative for ENT surgeons in your area? Acting as liaisons between Medicare Contractors and state and specialty societies, CACs play a pivotal role in advocating for local Medicare coverage policies that are fair and evidence-based. In every state, we seek interested members to represent otolaryngologists by participating in local CAC meetings and establishing good relationships with the Medicare Contractor Medical Directors.

Become a Centralized Otolaryngology Research Efforts (CORE) Study Section Reviewer of Research Grant Applications (Level 3, Level 4)The CORE Study Section meets every March in Dallas, TX, to review approximately 150 research grant applications for the AAO-HNSF and its participating sub-specialty societies. The Study Section is made up of three subcommittees including Head & Neck, Otology, and General Otolaryngology (e.g., Rhinology, Facial Plastics). Reviewers are responsible for reviewing 6-9 NIH-style grant applications, providing written critiques for each, and participating in the in-person review. All expenses are covered by the AAO-HNSF or one of the participating sub-specialty societies. In an effort to train our young physicians, six positions are annually reserved for new residents. Interested members should submit a copy of their CV to ResearchQIDept@entnet.org.

Review Journal Articles and Manuscripts (Level 3, Level 4)Reviewers for the journal Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery develop critical thinking skills that improve research, teaching, and clinical care. Star reviewers critique multiple manuscripts each year, providing informed and insightful comments that enhance journal content. Reviewers are eligible for three continuing medical education credits for each accepted review.

Submit research grant applications to the Centralized Otolaryngology Research Efforts (Level 3, Level 4)Obtain funding for 1) support of your research; 2) a systematic review that addresses needs identified by our Foundation’s Outcomes, Research and Evidence-based Medicine Committee (OREBM); or 3) a study to address the research gaps identified in one of the Clinical Practice Guidelines.
