The First Virtual World Otology Conference represents a major collaborative initiative among the world’s leading otologists. The aims of the meeting are three-fold:

  1. To provide high quality teaching in otology to otolaryngologists around the world, irrespective of where they live or their socio-economic circumstances
  2. To exploit contemporary communication technologies for teaching in otology and
  3. To demonstrate that international exchange can occur without the major environmental impact of conventional medical meetings.

Background
"Virtual" means that the conference will take place through the internet, with presenters and participants connected live from wherever they are. We expect up to 1000 participants from around the world to participate in this unique event. Expert otologists from various countries will cover a wide range of topics of general interest to otolaryngologists. The presentations will be Chaired by a ‘host’ who will lead the discussion and field questions from the global audience live to the presenter. A resource e-Library will be made available and discussion forum rooms will allow dialogue with other colleagues from around the globe. Recordings of all lectures will be accessible to participants for an additional 30 days. The meeting is being supported by the major international otolaryngology and otology associations.

Topics
Topics will include subjects of general interest to practising otolaryngologists and trainees in the speciality and will include: basic sciences, clinical audiology, conditions of the pinna and external ear, chronic suppurative ear disease, tympanoplasty, ossicular chain reconstruction, mastoid obliteration, mastoid cavity reconstruction, paediatric otology, diagnostic imaging, molecular otology, otosclerosis, Meniere’s disease, vertigo, tinnitus, neurotology and skull base surgery, temporal bone tumours, implantation otology (cochlear and middle ear implants), audit and surgical outcomes.
