CT Imaging Accreditation

Share |

With the adoption of in-office CT technologies, there is an emphasis on quality and safety.  Standardization through accreditation has become a reimbursement requirement for many third party payers.  Formalized standards for medical practices desiring to use in-office CT imaging have been established by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Computed Tomography Laboratories (ICACTL).

The American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery recognizes the importance of quality standards and accreditation for medical imaging and knows that Academy members look to the foundation to provide leadership on this issue.  In response to theses developments, the Academy has established the CT Imaging Working Group. This group is charged with providing additional resources and training for continuing medical education in this area and with monitoring continuing legislative and reimbursement developments.

The CT Imaging Working Group consists of:

  • Gavin Setzen, MD (chair)
  • James Hadley, MD (Rhinology and Allergy Education Committee)
  • Robert Jyung, MD (Otology and Neurotology Education Committee)
  • Greg Krempl, MD (Head and Neck Surgery Education Committee)
  • Christopher Miyamoto, MD (Pediatric Otolaryngology Education Committee)
  • Karen Pitman, MD (General Otolaryngology Education Committee)
  • Robert Pizzutiello (consultant - American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM))

In addition, we are working closely with ICACTL in this process.  Bill Ostrum, Program Manager for Education, is the Academy Coordinator for this important process.

The AAO-HNSF has always offered quality CT-related instruction courses and recommended literature on this topic; however, we are now embarking on creating a formal curriculum to advance physician education and patient safety.  The CT Working Group is developing curriculum through a variety of resources that meet both ACCME standards and ICACTL accreditation requirements.

Listed below are some of the resources available to help guide you through the accreditation process.  We will continue to develop course offerings in a variety of formats, via the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO, online courses through Academy U, hands-on instruction, and other modalities to enrich education and training for in-office CT imaging.

Please contact Bill Ostrum in the Department of Education with any questions regarding medical education relating to CT imaging and the accreditation process.
