Acute Otitis Externa-Otitis Media with Effusion Measures Approved by the AMA

Your Academy has partnered with the American Medical Association (AMA) convened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement to develop the first set of physician performance measures for otolaryngologists on acute otitis externa and otitis media with effusion. Three measures on acute otitis externa assess pain management, topical therapy, and the inappropriate use of systemic antibiotics were approved on Friday, March 9th. Five measures on otitis media with effusion deal with tympanic membrane mobility, hearing testing and the inappropriate use of systemic steroids and antimicrobials were also approved. These are the first in a series of measure sets being developed by your Academy in conjunction with the AMA.

These measures were based on the AAO-HNS guidelines on acute otitis externa and otitis media with effusion, which were both chaired by Richard M. Rosenfeld, MD, MPH.  The next AMA workgroup to be co-led by your Academy will focus on developing physician performance measures for rhinosinusitis.  The Rhinosinusitis workgroup will meet by the end of 2007 with public comment periods and AMA approval by the first quarter of 2008.
