Our regular edition of The ENT Advocate newsletter has been modified to highlight important information regarding one of the AAO-HNS’ key legislative priorities.
On May 21, U.S. Representative Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) reintroduced a “kitchen sink” audiology bill (H.R. 2519) that the AAO-HNS strongly opposes. If enacted, H.R. 2519 would:
- Grant audiologists unlimited direct access to Medicare patients without a physician referral; and
- Amend Title XVIII of the Social Security Act to grant audiologists “limited license physician” status within the Medicare program.
H.R. 2519 essentially ignores the physician referral and oversight requirements established by Medicare to control unnecessary costs and protect patient safety. Audiologists are NOT physicians and their training is NOT equal to the training of those with an MD/DO.
We are not alone in our opposition to this misguided policy. In the last Congress, more than 110 health-related organizations joined us in opposing similar legislation, and we expect to maintain the same level of support for our position this year.
As a member of the ENT Advocacy Network, please
to urge him/her to oppose H.R. 2519.
Thank you in advance for your support of the Academy’s advocacy efforts. If you have questions and/or would like additional information, please contact the AAO-HNS Legislative Advocacy team at firstname.lastname@example.org. And, look for the next full edition of The ENT Advocate on Friday, June 12.
