AAO-HNS Submits Comments to FDA on Access to Hearing Aids and PSAPs
On June 30, the AAO-HNS submitted comments to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding “Streamlining Regulations for Good Manufacturing Practices for Hearing Aids.” The FDA is the latest government agency to explore the topic, with the AAO-HNS already having submitted similar comments to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM).

Action Requested

Urge Your U.S. Senators to Support Newborn Hearing Screening
The AAO-HNS, in collaboration with others in the hearing healthcare community, is working to obtain additional cosponsors for S. 2424, a bill to reauthorize the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program. AAO-HNS Members can play a crucial part in this effort by contacting their U.S. Senators today!

Countdown to Conventions
August is typically a quiet month on Capitol Hill, with lawmakers having returned to their states/districts for the “summer” recess. However, given this year’s Presidential elections, the recess period will begin two weeks early to accommodate back-to-back Presidential Nominating Conventions. The Republican National Convention will be held July 18-21 in Cleveland, OH, immediately followed by the Democratic National Convention from July 25-28 in Philadelphia, PA. Be on the lookout for some exciting programming!

Make the Most of the Congressional Summer Recess
As of July 16, Congress will be out of session for the remainder of summer to campaign and meet with constituents. Take advantage of this year’s extended recess period to schedule a meeting with your federal lawmaker(s) close to home. Contact the Academy’s Legislative Advocacy staff to schedule your In-district Grassroots Outreach meeting today! Congress will reconvene on Tuesday, September 6.

Crunch Time for ENT PAC

It’s hard to believe that Election Day 2016 is only a couple months away. As such, the Academy’s legislative/political staff is working hard to ensure that ENT PAC is well-poised to support pro-otolaryngology incumbents and candidates leading up to November, as well as in the first months of the 115th Congress. Given the contentious nature of the Presidential race and the uncertain political realities we will face in January, it is that much more important to ensure we have as many pro-specialty lawmakers in Congress as possible. Help achieve this goal by making your 2016 ENT PAC contribution today!*

PROJECT 535: Next Steps
PROJECT 535, a BOG-sponsored initiative, is off to a great start! Since its September 2015 launch, the program now boasts otolaryngologists as legislative “key contacts” in more than 50 percent of Congressional districts. With your help, we can achieve our next goal of 60 percent. Learn more and sign up today!

Other AAO-HNS Informational Updates

SRF Survey Still Open
Each year, the Section for Residents and Fellows-in-Training (SRF) leadership carefully constructs a survey aimed at better understanding the experience of otolaryngology residents and fellows. Valuable input from the survey, which can be completed in less than 10 minutes, helps the AAO-HNS better serve its SRF members. Click here to complete the survey today!
