Bundled Codes for Audiological Services
There are three codes for CPT 2010 that have bundled together several audiological tests. These codes were created because the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) discovered that these tests were frequently billed together in the Medicare population. As a result, CMS felt that they were paying multiple times for the pre- and post- work that was included in each of the CPT codes. CMS requested that the American Medical Association (AMA) CPT Editorial Panel and the Relative Value Update Committee (RUC) create bundled codes to address the situation, and to recommend relative values for the codes.
The codes are:
- 92540--Basic vestibular evaluation, includes spontaneous nystagmus test with eccentric gaze fixation nystagmus, with recording, positional nystagmus test, minimum of 4 positions, with recording, optokinetic nystagmus test, bidirectional foveal and peripheral stimulation, with recording, and oscillating tracking test, with recording. (Do not report 92540 in conjunction with 92541, 92542, 92544, or 92545)
- 92550--Tympanometry and reflex threshold measurements. (Do not report 92550 in conjunction with 92567, 92568)
- 92570--Acoustic immittance testing, includes tympanometry (impedance testing), acoustic reflex threshold testing, and acoustic reflex decay testing. (Do not report 92570 in conjunction with 92567, 92568)
The AAO-HNS, along with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), conducted a RUC survey in their respective memberships. However, since audiologists are the primary providers of these services, the data obtained from the audiologists was used to determine the relative value units (RVUs) for the combined codes. These codes are effective January 1, 2010. For further questions, please contact the Health Policy team.
