American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and its Foundation Announce New President: Gavin Setzen, MD

CHICAGO, IL— Gavin Setzen, MD, on Wednesday became the new president of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) and its Foundation. Elected by AAO-HNS members, Dr. Setzen will serve a one-year term leading the Academy’s nearly 12,000 members who specialize in the treatment of the ears, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck.

“I have been a member since 1992, an organization whose mission and strategic plan is laser-focused on advancing education, science, research, advocacy, and health policy to ensure that its members are in the best possible position to care for patients with disorders of the ear, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck, both in the United States and around the world. Dedication, passion, and commitment to excellence in patient care will propel the AAO-HNS forward in the year ahead as we collaborate with other key stakeholders in the healthcare debate to ensure safe, affordable, efficient, timely, accessible healthcare for all our patients,” said Dr. Setzen.

Dr. Setzen is President and a managing partner of Albany ENT and Allergy Services, PC, in Albany, NY. His other notable positions include Clinical Associate Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Albany Medical College and Chief of the Otolaryngology Division at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, NY. He is an active member and Fellow of several organizations, including the AAO-HNS, American College of Surgeons (ACS), the American Rhinologic Society, the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy, and the American Head and Neck Society.

Prior to being elected president, Dr. Setzen held several leadership positions in the AAO-HNS, including Secretary–Treasurer, Chairman of the Board of Governors, and Chair of the Imaging Committee, amongst others. Additionally, he served as President of the New York State Society of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery; President of the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) - CT Division; and member of the Board of Directors of the IAC.

Dr. Setzen’s clinical and research interests include the medical and surgical management of nasal and sinus disorders, otolaryngic allergy, thyroid and parathyroid endocrine surgery, point-of-service CT imaging, coding in rhinology and allergy, as well as practice management and socioeconomic aspects of healthcare. He has published numerous peer-review articles and has delivered over 80 scientific lectures and presentations at national and international meetings. He is currently a Health Policy Scholar for the AAO-HNS and ACS for 2017-2018 after completing the “Leadership Program in Health Policy and Management” through Brandeis University, The Heller School for Social Policy and Management, in Waltham, MA.  

Dr. Setzen received his medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand Medical School in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was a general surgery resident at North Shore University Hospital, Cornell University Medical College in New York, NY, before completing an Otolaryngology residency at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY.
