Academy Efforts: Transition from FFS to Value-Based Payment Systems (3/30/2015)
In addition to the numerous changes in coding and reporting requirements that are facing physicians today, the fee-for-service model is being rapidly replaced with a variety of value and quality based compensation models. As a part of our strategic plan, the Academy is committed to helping our members sort through the compensation model confusion and implement the optimal payment model for their practice.
In order to develop an educational tool for members navigating the fee-for-service evolution, the Academy's Alternative Payment Model Workgroup reached out to our state leaders on the Board of Governors to conduct a survey in states already experiencing a payment model transition to review member knowledge and participation. The survey revealed an eagerness to learn more about alternative payment models. For a summary of the survey results, please click here.
To build member awareness, the Academy is reaching out to members with APM involvement to create a resource of otolaryngology experiences with APMs to release through ENTConnect in coming weeks. The resource will consist of continual, periodic reports of ENT APM involvement in the field on ENT Connect over several months to help our members become more familiar with how APM's are affecting Otolaryngology.
Tonsillectomy Bundle in Arkansas Medicaid Payment Initiative
As part of a Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) State Innovation Program (SIM) grant, Arkansas developed a bundled payment initiative that included collaboration with private and public insurers with the goal to transform Arkansas’ health system. Twelve bundles including inpatient and outpatient bundles were developed and launched over the short span of two years. Specific relevance to otolaryngology-head and neck surgeons is that one of the bundles is for tonsillectomy.
