Not-to-be-missed Simulation Center and Simulation Events at #OTOMTG24

Miami meeting features over two dozen new and returning interactive, hands-on simulation events designed to superpower your surgical skills.

According to Katherine R. Kavanagh, MD, Chair of the AAO-HNSF Simulation Education Committee, “Simulation education offers attendees a hands-on experience to augment traditional didactic learning.”

“Integrating simulation within the Annual Meeting is an exciting opportunity to learn from experts and practice surgical and even nontechnical skills,” Dr. Kavanagh explains. “There is truly something for everyone including frontal sinus dissection, rhinoplasty, slide tracheoplasty, and much more. I encourage all attendees to enrich their Annual Meeting experience by participating in simulation.”

This year’s Simulation events are already underway and continue through Monday with a full slate of not-to-be-missed education sessions. Returning this year is the Otolaryngology Escape Room Experience on Sunday from 9:00 – 11:30 am  and 1:00 – 2:00 pm. Last year in Nashville, a team of 14 faculty members created six action-packed stations challenging participants on their otolaryngology skills and knowledge. A total of 100 participants across 26 teams competed. The first- and second-place teams (Team Hodge Podge and Bad and Bougie) took home the top honors, and the best team name went to the Supreme Turbinates.

This year’s new and improved “A Puzzling Night on Call: An Otolaryngology Escape Room Experience” will feature six brand new stations, an extended time to compete, and a final mystery diagnosis challenge. You can arrive any time during the session to compete. Bring your own team of four or come on your own and you will be placeed in a group of four. Be ready to have fun and engage with your team to solve each station and the final puzzle. Winners will be announced at the Simulation Showcase and SIM Tank, on Sunday.

The Simulation Showcase provides an opportunity for simulation scholars to demonstrate their innovative otolaryngology simulators, projects, and curriculum. The top three most innovative simulation projects will present to a panel of expert judges while competing for the top prize during the SIM Tank. Projects are judged on innovation, creativity, scalability throughout the specialty, and advancement of training and practice in the field. The SIM Tank will be held at the Loews Hotel in the Americana Ballroom, Salon 3, Sunday, September 29, 5:00 – 6:30 pm.
