Why are you interested in the YPS position? What do you hope to accomplish in this role?

After a few years in practice, I finally feel as though I’m ready to jump into a potential role for the YPS. Being a member of the nominating committee offers me an opportunity to work with the previous YPS president as well as another elected member. This in itself leads to starting into network opportunities that exist beyond my area of practice. Delving into trying to identify well qualified applicants for positions and offering up potential nominations also increases my ability to communicate with other providers that I previously would not have had access to. At the same time, it allows me to learn more about the YPS, the roles and impact it plays for young physicians, and potentially allows me the opportunity to continue to grow in this leadership type role. Aside from the personal growth that this position affords, it also will allow me to make an impact in hopefully providing excellent candidates that can make contributions to the YPS.

What in your background suggests you will be successful in this position?

Past performance can hopefully predict some form of future success. I currently have two leadership roles within the University of Colorado’s School of Medicine and Hospital system. I sit as a member at large for the medical executive committee for one of our local hospitals as well as serve as a current senator for our school of medicine representing the otolaryngology department. This has allowed me to begin to learn some of the “behind the scenes” work that goes on to see continued growth in these areas. Hopefully, I can bring some of that insight in working with the YPS. At the same time, I work as an assistant professor for our department. This has provided me with a great network of colleagues which has several branches throughout the country. As a member of the nominating committee, this will allow me to comb a wide network of young physicians who may make great candidates.

What do you think this position can do to improve mentorship of Young Physicians in the AAO-HNS?

This position is unique in a few ways that it can impact mentorship. This position isn’t involved in creating new content and opportunities directly, but can indirectly do a great deal. The first, and hopefully what provides the most impact to the YPS, is by finding great candidates to nominate for positions. Excellent candidates in these positions will hopefully value mentorship and by doing so, can increase the mentorship capabilities within YPS. The other area where I can see this position improving mentorship is by networking with other young physicians who may not be familiar with YPS. By looking for candidates, that may allow us to communicate with people who may not be aware of what the YPS had to offer, and in turn, offers some direct mentorship in that way. Through those contacts, we may create some network opportunities that allow us to improve each other, either by finding people with more experience in certain areas, or being able to mentor those more new into their practice.
