Our specialty continues to face unprecedented challenges as we confront health care disparities exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis and strengthen our roles as advocates for patients of underrepresented backgrounds. As the BOG Alternate Governor for the Socioeconomic and Grassroots (SEGR) Committee over the past two years, I served on multiple panels intended to prepare incoming ENT interns for residency, moderated a panel on Enhanced Recovery After Surgery at the last Academy meeting, and conducted research on Otolaryngology and underserved populations including those seeking out gender affirming ENT care. With this foundation as well as a background in health care systems management, my goals for the Section for Residents and Fellows as Chair-Elect remain three-fold: first, to provide opportunities (in person and virtual) for residents to engage in advocacy efforts addressing cultural awareness, current issues, and implicit bias within health care; second, to communicate issues to residents and fellows-in-training as well as to deliver trainees’ recommendations to the AAO-HNS/F Boards of Directors; and third, to support the development of resources for residents to enhance their well-rounded training in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.
