The AAO-HNS/F Board of Directors Is Seeking Applicants for the Coordinator for Education for the 2023-2027 Term
The role of the Coordinator for Education is to lead the development and execution of AAO-HNSF education strategy in support of the AAO-HNS/F mission to empower otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons to provide the best patient care.
The ideal candidate will possess an innovative and thoughtful perspective on the education needs of members and be able to use that perspective to design dynamic, engaging, and valuable education experiences for all audiences.
Term
The Coordinator for Education, who will be selected by the Board, will serve a single four (4)-year term of office, from October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2027. The Coordinator for Education-Elect will shadow the incumbent Coordinator for Education from October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023. The Coordinator for Education may be re-elected to a second term only after the passage of at least four years from the end of their term. Coordinators receive a stipend.

Qualifications
- Must be a board-certified otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon and an active member of the AAO-HNS.
- Awareness of the changing landscape in healthcare as impacted by federal and state legislation, public policy initiatives, workforce changes, globalization issues, and technology enhancements and how these affect patient safety and improved health outcomes.
- Awareness of the changing landscape in continuing professional development (CPD) in the medical field including changes in licensure, certification, industry involvement, performance improvement efforts, and continuing medical education standards.
- Demonstrate an ability and willingness to:
- Manage a large, complex continuing professional development program integrating the education needs, interests, involvement, and points of view of a diverse and passionate membership base
- Provide an innovative approach to CPD through an understanding of competitive activities and development of new products
- Lead education volunteers in data-driven gap analyses, education needs’ assessments, and decision-making processes to best determine the focus of the CPD program
- Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of OTO Logic, the AAO-HNSF dynamic education program designed to provide education activities and resources that meet the learning needs and styles of all members
- Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of FLEX, the AAO-HNSF premier multiplatform professional development program
- Adhere to the organization’s policy of strict compliance with federal and state antitrust laws and the organization’s Board Standards
- Understand and accept the fiduciary responsibilities of a Board member
- Actively participate in deliberations and exercise care in decision-making around CPD and AAO-HNS/F Board-level activities
- Promote the organization’s image by generally staying informed and representing the AAO-HNS/F to others
- Recruit and orient future members and leaders
- Maintain status as a member in good standing and adhere to the Academy’s Code of Ethics
- Treat other Board or committee members and staff with respect and courtesy

- What would be the 2-3 priority changes to the Foundation education platform you would like to implement in the next 4 years? What resources do you think will be needed to accomplish this? (400 words)
- What are your current time commitments? What do you think the required time commitment will be to perform effectively as the coordinator? Describe the extent to which 5-6 trips to Washington, DC, per year will impact your current work/life balance? (200 words)

- In relation to developing education content, what would a future collaboration with the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and the specialty societies look like? How would you go about making it happen?
- What has been a project that you have led/chaired that has taken several years to complete? What has been the outcome of this project?
- What are your strengths as a leader? Give an example.
- Describe some of the changes occurring in Continuing Medical Education (CME) and how they will impact the Foundation’s education platform.
- How would you position the education content of the Foundation so that it is the first place members go for professional development and CME credit?
- How could you best align CME with the research/quality/guideline agenda at the AAO-HNSF?
- How would you envision internal collaboration with the other Academy information resources (i.e., journals, research/clinical practice guidelines and expert consensus statements, and Annual Meeting)?
- Adult education learning styles are in a state of change. What do you think will be otolaryngologists preferred education formats over the next 10-20 years? And what kind of education content do you think will be needed?
