Position Overview

The AAO-HNS Delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates (HOD) represents the Academy and the specialty of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery in the AMA’s policy-making body. The Delegate supports Academy advocacy priorities, participates in delegation planning, and communicates key outcomes to AAO-HNS leadership and members.

Term and Meeting Commitment

Appointment term (per AAO-HNS bylaws): The appointed Delegate shall serve a three-year term, and may serve three additional terms, for a total of four successive three-year terms (totaling 12 years).

The AMA HOD generally meets twice per year (Annual Meeting in June and Interim Meeting in November). The Delegate should plan to attend both meetings each year, plus related caucuses/section meetings and any AAO-HNS delegation preparation calls.

Upcoming meeting dates (subject to change):

• 2026 AMA HOD Annual Meeting: June 5–10, Chicago, Illinois
• 2026 AMA HOD Interim Meeting: Nov. 6–10, Orlando, Florida

There are an estimated five expected travel days per meeting.

Time commitment outside official HOD meetings includes pre-reading, delegation calls, and reporting.

Reimbursement and Support

All expenses directly related to travel for the AMA HOD meetings will be reimbursed. This includes transportation, lodging, and meals.

Academy staff provides assistance to the delegation with meeting preparation, logistical support, and managing reimbursements.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Applicants should be able to demonstrate:

• Current AAO-HNS membership in good standing
• Current AMA membership in good standing (or commitment to obtain/maintain AMA membership)
• Experience with organized medicine, governance, advocacy, health policy, or clinical practice management
• Ability to prepare for and attend required meetings and participate in delegation activities
• Professionalism, collaboration, and the ability to represent AAO-HNS positions effectively

Core Duties and Expectations

The Delegate is generally expected to:

• Review proposed AMA HOD resolutions and reports prior to each meeting
• Participate in AAO-HNS delegation preparation calls and planning
• Attend the AMA HOD Annual and Interim Meetings and participate in reference committee processes, as needed
• Represent AAO-HNS at meetings of the Section Council on Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (OTO-HNS) held in conjunction with HOD meetings.
• Represent AAO-HNS at ancillary meetings (e.g., the Surgical Caucus) if requested
• Review, be familiar with, and adhere to the AAO-HNS/F mission, strategic plan, bylaws, and applicable policies
• Protect confidentiality of internal discussions and deliberations
• Disclose and manage conflicts of interest, including relevant financial relationships with commercial interests
• Maintain AAO-HNS membership in good standing and adhere to the Academy’s Code of Ethics.
