Humanitarian Efforts Committee

Mission: To encourage participation of members in global humanitarian efforts to improve the prevention and treatment of otolaryngologic disorders within the United States and abroad by publicizing opportunities for involvement, facilitating mechanisms that expose otolaryngology trainees to humanitarian activities, developing and nurturing collaborative relationships with other medical groups and international organizations, and evaluating ethical issues and disparity concerns in research and clinical practice in low-resource settings.

Structure: The AAO-HNS/F Humanitarian Efforts Committee meets its charge through the combined efforts of 5 distinct workgroups.

  • Humanitarian Travel Grant & Awards: responsible for promoting the Humanitarian Travel Grant program, reviewing applications and selecting awardees, as well as soliciting nominations for the Academy’s International & Humanitarian Awards program
  • Scholarly Output: responsible for ensuring timely humanitarian efforts-themed symposia abstracts are submitted for consideration as part of the AAO-HNS Annual Meeting Call for Science.
  • Communications: responsible for leading communications initiatives to engage physicians seeking to learn more about humanitarian opportunities. The “Stories from the Road” series in the Bulletin is a regular product from this workgroup.
  • Education Efforts: responsible for creating new and highlighting existing virtual learning and simulations opportunities as a tool for medical professionals in low-resourced communities.
  • Instrument Acquisition and Distribution: responsible for acquiring and distributing medical instruments to support improved access to otolaryngologic care in low-resource settings and promoting best practices for sustainable use.

Get Involved: Committee applications are available for submission toward the end of each calendar year. However, even if you are not currently a member of the committee, you can still attend the Humanitarian Efforts forum and committee meetings as a guest and contribute with ideas or special projects. We encourage you to contact [email protected] with any questions.
