AAO-HNS Comments on Cigna Obstructive Sleep Apnea Treatment Services Coverage Policy (6/24/2020)

On June 15, the AAO-HNS sent comments to Cigna opposing their medical policy on “Obstructive Sleep Apnea Treatment Services” which designated hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) as investigational. Based on coverage by Medicare Administrative Contractors, private insurers, and the strong evidence supporting HGNS’ efficacy, the Academy requested that Cigna amend its policy to include coverage of these devices. In response to comments submitted, Cigna updated its policy to include coverage of HGNS when specific clinical criteria are met. The Academy’s comments can be found here and Cigna’s updated policy can be found here.
