AAO-HNS comments on CMS Proposed Rule for Improving Prior Authorization and Interoperability

On December 13, 2022, CMS issued a proposed rule that aimed to reduce provider burden by improving prior authorization processes and interoperability. The Academy submitted comments in response to the proposed regulation on March 13, thanking the agency for their efforts to reduce provider burden and asking for further improvements to the prior authorization process and interoperability. The comments focused on the following components of the rule: timely delivery of care; use of a single prior authorization process; MIPS reporting on use of e-PA; compliance enforcement; functional interoperability among all providers; and gold-carding programs for prior authorization. Additionally, the Academy joined members of the Alliance of Specialty Medicine in submitting comments which addressed other elements of the rule affecting specialty providers.
