Resident Reviewer Application: 2025 CORE Study Section

ATTENTION RESIDENTS: The opportunity to participate in the 2025 CORE Study Section as a resident reviewer is now open!

The AAO-HNSF Centralized Otolaryngology Research Efforts (CORE) Study Section would like to invite up to eight residents to serve on the 2025 CORE Study Section and participate in the review of CORE grant applications. This is an invaluable opportunity for residents to learn how to review grants and become better grant writers.

What is a Study Section? The Center for Scientific Review has produced a video of a mock study section meeting to provide an inside look at how NIH grant applications are reviewed for scientific and technical merit. The video demonstrates how experts assess applications and how review meetings are conducted to ensure fairness while also including information on how to improve one’s chance of receiving a positive review for their application.

The CORE review process closely emulates the NIH’s evaluation of grant applications making it a valuable learning experience for emerging researchers. Engaging in this opportunity will enable residents to enhance their grant-writing abilities, better preparing them for future review endeavors. Each resident will be paired with one of the more experienced CORE Study Section reviewers to help guide them through the process.

Selected residents will be required to:

  • Provide a review of approximately 10 assignments (typically as a tertiary reviewer, which is a note-taking role).
  • Attend the March 15, 2025 (Virtual) CORE Study Section to review grant applications.

INTERESTED?  Please submit the following information by 5:00 pm (ET) on January 2, 2025.

  • Completed application
  • CV
  • Optional – letter of support from your department chair or an active CORE Study Section Reviewer
