What’s New in CORE This Cycle

The CORE Grants Program is excited to introduce several new funding opportunities this cycle, expanding support across a wide range of topics and training levels. As the program evolves to meet the needs of our research community, we are committed to fostering partnerships that strengthen opportunities for investigators across the specialty. We look forward to the innovative projects and ideas that will emerge through these new mechanisms.

AAO-HNSF Reg-ent Resident Research Grant

This new grant supports projects that leverage the Reg-ent clinical data registry to advance evidence-based otolaryngology care. Proposals may address any area within otolaryngology–head and neck surgery but must demonstrate clear or potential clinical relevance for patients.

Priority will be given to innovative proposals that use Reg-ent data to drive improvements in quality of care, outcomes, and practice variation across the specialty, as well as studies that address research gaps identified by AAO-HNS/F.

While the Reg-ent team will review Letters of Intent to ensure that proposed projects are an appropriate fit for a full application, applicants are strongly encouraged to review Reg-ent’s Data Dictionary and determine alignment with Reg-ent data capabilities before submitting. Visit Reg-ent℠ | Research for more information on research with Reg-ent.

Lilly Research Grant: Genetic Hearing Loss Advancing Research and Understanding

Sponsored by Eli Lilly and Company, this new grant mechanism focuses on advancing the understanding of genetic contributors to hearing loss. Projects should address the clinical use and impact of genetic testing for hearing loss by improving access, diagnostic workflows, and patient outcomes, while identifying opportunities to better integrate genetic evaluation into routine otolaryngologic care. Ultimately, this grant supports research that brings precision-medicine approaches closer to everyday practice for patients with hereditary sensorineural hearing loss.

International Surgical Sleep Society (ISSS) Research Grant

The ISSS Research Grant is CORE’s first dedicated mechanism supporting sleep medicine. It aims to foster innovative, scientifically rigorous research in sleep medicine and sleep surgery. The mechanism is intentionally broad to support projects that have the potential to improve understanding, clinical care, and patient outcomes within the field. The grant is notable for its inclusive eligibility criteria since international applicants are welcome to apply. This reflects CORE’s growing reach and commitment to supporting global collaboration in sleep research.

AAO-HNSF/SFA Thomas S. Higgins Unified Airway Research Grant

This new collaboration with Snot Force Alliance, Inc. (SFA) offers an opportunity to advance research in unified airway disease. The grant leverages the Reg-ent clinical data registry to evaluate relationships, practice patterns, and clinical outcomes across inflammatory, immunologic, and allergic conditions that span both the upper airway (sinus and nasal pathology) and the lower airway (pulmonary disease). Priority will be given to innovative proposals with the potential to grow into long-term research programs or broader investigative agendas. By centering on real-world clinical data, the grant aims to generate actionable insights that meaningfully impact patient care.

Exciting opportunities in allergy

Additionally, we encourage residents and fellows to submit allergy-related research topics through AAO-HNSF grant mechanisms. We are actively exploring future partnerships to strengthen support for allergy and immunology research and to help cultivate the next generation of investigators in this area of the specialty.
