Why do you want to be involved in the leadership of the OPPS?
I became involved with the OPPS after its inaugural meeting in 2023 as a member of the resident outreach committee. I quickly realized this forum has massive value in its ability to connect and educate the private sector of our specialty. I feel indebted to private practice, and the freedom it has offered me so far in my career. My goal in serving this section will be to help preserve the private landscape for the future generations of physicians by strengthening the available resources we have to build sustainable regional practices. Graduating residents need a choice other than an academic center, hospital chain, or large rollup group backed by outside investors.
As the OPPS matures, what is your vision of its future?
This group’s primary focus should always be on information sharing. We have a precedent for sharing ideas, but I would like to see more concrete resources available to younger physicians starting out on their own. I also see the group expanding its leadership initiatives in the future, working more closely with the leadership both in the AAO-HNS as well as the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. Our members need to be more involved in the committees that create guidelines and dictate practice patterns. Finally, I want to foster the section’s relationship with industry and create more avenues for product development and research that do not have to go first through a major academic center.
