St. Luke’s University Hospital

Why are you interested in the YPS position? What do you hope to accomplish in this role?

Having just finished residency and joining a practice with a new residency program, I am particularly interested in continuing my involvement with teaching, training, and advocating for our physicians and trainees but now on a broader level through the YPS. I believe the nominating is a good position to start out on the YPS and seeks candidates from different backgrounds with unique interests.

One of my unique areas of interest is physician wellness. While serving on my GME wellness committee and during my residency I was involved in several unique wellness avenues ranging from interactive didactics, mission trips, to Jiu-Jitsu classes, I hope to bring my unique experiences and perspectives on this issue to a larger audience through the YPS.

What in your background suggests you will be successful in this position?

During my residency, I was involved in several elected graduate medical education and house officer association positions. While working on these committees, I learned the importance of team work and working with others with different opinions to accomplish a common goal in a productive meaningful fashion. Importantly, I learned the ability to reach out to and listen to those I was serving and effectively advocate for them.

What do you think this position can do to improve mentorship of Young Physicians in the AAO-HNS?

I think one of the most critical issues facing our field and medicine in general is the issue of burnout and physician wellness. I think one of the most important things we can start to do and place a greater emphasis on, is not only look to mentor our young physicians in their usual academic and research pursuits, but also in wellness. I think one of the first steps in starting to place a greater emphasis on this type of mentorship, is by bringing in those with diverse backgrounds, experiences with advocating for others, and opinions on some of these newer issues facing our field. I think this is something I could help accomplish given my experiences through the nominating committee.
