Over the past several years, all of us have unfortunately become accustomed to “unprecedented events” both in the United States and in the world at large. As things continue to change at a rapid pace, it becomes more important for us as physicians to share our perspectives, advocate for ourselves and our patients and help to shape the world around us into one that is better for all patients in the future. Advocacy and legislation are two of the most important tools for us as physicians and Academy members in making a positive impact on our patients’ lives on a larger scale. I am incredibly humbled to currently be serving as the SRF Board of Governors Alternative Governor for Legislative Affairs and hope to continue serving you and our patients in this capacity.

This will be my third year serving on the AAO-HNS Legislative Affairs Committee as I continue to share the SRF/YPS perspective on issues that matter to us. During my tenure on this committee, I have participated in our Day of Advocacy, where I lobbied for Academy priorities to congress. I have traveled to Washington, DC, with the ACS Leadership and Advocacy Summit where I had the opportunity to not only learn important skills for advocacy and lobbying, but directly share the perspective of young Otolaryngologists with congress people on issues like Medicare payments, student loans, and gun control. I have helped to recruit members for our legislative initiatives such as Project 535 and I-Go and hope to leverage this more in the coming year in order to make sure that your voice is heard. As your BOG Legislative Affairs Representative, I hope to continue serving as a voice for you in the rooms where you are not, and a channel for you to access those rooms. I will work to share our perspectives as young Otolaryngologists on issues that matter to us, and advocate for policies that will allow our patients to receive the best care possible. I will continue to seek a better, more equitable solution for the tough questions we have yet to answer. I look forward to continuing to serve you!
