At the conclusion of the Annual Meeting, participants should be able to:

1. Apply knowledge of current issues affecting the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of otolaryngologic and related disorders;
2. Analyze research-based information and updates on practical applications affecting operative procedures, drugs, and medical devices;
3. Utilize improved practice management techniques to facilitate physician performance improvement; and
4. Translate into practice a broader understanding of the approaches used in the practice of otolaryngology—head and neck surgery in countries outside of the United States.

Description of Session Types

The 2009 Annual Meeting program, developed by the AAO-HNSF 2008–2009 Program Advisory Committee and the Instruction Course Advisory Committee is made up of the following types of sessions.

Scientific Program

The formerly named Translational & Basic Research Program and Scientific (Clinical Research) Program have been working together to better integrate the programming to represent the full continuum from basic science research through translational research and clinical practice. To that end, the combined programs will now be solely referred to as the Scientific Program. The Scientific Program of the annual meeting is comprised of scientific sessions, miniseminars, and scientific poster presentations.

Orals
A series of eight-minute oral presentations in cutting edge clinical and translational basic research aspects of otolaryngology.

Posters
Displayed throughout the course of the annual meeting.

Miniseminars
A 50- or 80-minute miniseminar provides an in-depth, state-of-the-art look at a specific topic. Topics for miniseminar presentations are suggested by the leadership, committees, or members.

Instruction Courses

Early registration for instruction courses increases the possibility of receiving your first-choice selections and saves you money. Instruction course fees are $50 per hour and $70 per hour for hands-on courses, if you register in advance. Instruction course fees increase onsite, to $70 per hour and to $90 per hour for hands-on courses.

There are four types of courses:

Regular
One- or two-hour session that addresses current diagnostic, therapeutic, and practice management topics.

Hands-on
Hands-on courses allow each attendee to participate in the presentation.

Mini-Courses
Limited to 20 participants, mini-courses promote informal discussion and the exchange of information.

Interactive
Interactive courses will use an Audience Response System, allowing audience members to respond to the presenter during the course.

Computer based courses will not be presented at this year’s Annual Meeting.
